Last Night as I Lay Sleeping
by Antonio Machado
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.
Last night as I slept,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
here inside my heart.
Ahhhh; this is one of my very favorite poems. What amazing solace and peace and inspiration Machado stores in these simple but direct lines. Who translated this version, do you know? It’s absolutely lovely.
Hi Amy – Lovely, yes, and also one of my faves. Robert Bly is credited with this translation.
The heart is a deep wonderful place I happen to live my life by. There is much to explore in my heart. There is a burning desire to go further inside my heart and soul. Explore and share with those around me my learnings by living by what I learn. Be an example. Be true, be genuine, be brave, move into that which I fear and move through it. One dream is to walk throuh all I fear, my love in my heart will see me through the other side of fear or any challenge that may come up. I do dream to continue to work towards all that I desire, I know I can have what I want in my world if I only let go and let God, I will be taken care of.
Kathi – Thank you for this reminder to let our heart be the guide. So much juicier than the mind.
